THRIVE AT HAPPY HARES
At Happy Hares, we use the ‘Thrive Approach’ to support children’s emotional; wellbeing and social development, right from the very start of their learning journey.
What is Thrive?
Thrive is a research-based approach that helps adults understand how children’s brains develop, and how feelings, behaviour and learning are closely linked.It focuses on;
- Building strong, trusting relationships between adults and children.
- Recognising underlying feelings behind behaviour.
- Supporting children to name and manage their emotions.
- Creating a calm, predictable environment where children feel safe and ready to learn.
Through Thrive, we aim to give children the emotional foundations they need to become confident, resilient, curious learners.
Our Thrive Ethos.
Thrives runs through daily life at Happy Hares nursery, not just on special sessions. You’ll see it in;
- Warm, responsive interactions between staff and children.
- Constant boundaries, explained in a kind and age-appropriate way.
- Cosy, calm spaces where children can regulate and reset.
- Activities that develop self-esteem, cooperation and problem-solving.
- A focus on connection first, then correction when difficulties arise.
We believe that every behaviour is communication. By looking beyond the behaviour and understanding the feeling underneath, we can better support a child’s individual needs.
Thrive Activities for Young Children.
- Story times and role-play to explore feelings, friendships and different points of view.
- Creative arts and sensory play (paint, clay, water, sand, sensory trays) to help children express emotions safely and non-verbally.
- Music, movement and dance to support body awareness, confidence and joy.
- Turn-taking games and small-group activities to build social skills, empathy and patience.
- Relaxation and calming routines, such as breathing games, gentle stretches and quiet reflection times.
These activities are tailored to the age and stage of each child, helping them to;
- Feel safe and valued.
- Develop self-confidence and independence.
- Manage big feelings in healthy ways.
- Build strong friendships and social skills.
